I always find that shooting into the sun in the early afternoon, at about a 45 degree angle, gets best results in terms of background for this kind of shot. The grass always ends up looking a little brighter and more ephemeral, and brings out stronger contrasts on the subject.

Prints are available from http://riot.dpcprints.com as usual.

I really like these birds. And this is an amazing shot.
It looks brilliant how close the Black Kite is flying over the grass ground.
Really good!

Wow! That's an amazing shot!

You really captured the kite's power, I think. The position of the wings looks beautiful and menacing at the same time. And its dark color is an excellent contrast with the grass.

A shot like this, and you're concerned about the background. I find that ironic. What a beautiful photo! A little different from seeing raptors in the sky like I usually do. Very neat, and good pose, too. How did you take it, just wait around for a kite to show up? :)

Basically, yes, with a 100-400L IS at the long end. When their mind is on their dinner, they generally ignore humans. As for the background - well, the background is one variable in this image that's under my control, so it makes sense to discuss my intentions for it - whereas the kite is not, that's just a matter of observation and timing.

I love my 350, but I'm just moving into SLRs and it's an intimidating world! Great result you have here, though. It was worth the patience, I think, but I wasn't the one sitting out in a field (and honestly that doesn't sound bad to me at all).
